Adzuki Bean Powder(Phaseolus angularis)
Used in skin care by the Japanese for centuries, adzuki bean powder gently exfoliates the skin without damaging the surface of the skin. Adzuki bean is rich in naturally occurring B-complex vitamins, calcium, potassium, phosphorous, iron, zinc, folic acid and Omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids.
Allantoin (Glyoxyl-diureide/Comfrey Root Extract)
White tasteless, odorless powder said to relieve skin irritations caused by soaps, detergents and alkalies in skin care products. It is said to promote wound healing and tissue formation but is not recognized for that by regulatory agencies.
 
Almond Oil (Amygdalus communis)
Almond Oil is known to soften and condition dry skin. It contains many vitamins and minerals and promotes a clear complexion.. Almond oil is expressed from almonds. Beneficial properties are thought to be that it does not clog pores,  it is well absorbed by the skin, it softens the skin. It is used in skin care to sooth itchy, dry, inflamed skin. Excellent for sensitive, dry skin.
Aloe Butter (Cocos Nucifera Oil / Aloe Barbadensis  Leaf Extract)
Aloe butter is an extract of aloe vera, aloe barbadensis in a coconut base. It is solid at room temperature but melts on the skin. Used after sun exposure to moisturize, in lotions, soaps, creams and lip balms to augment moisturization and to gain the properties of Aloe.
Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis)
Soothing, heals wounds, stops bleeding, relieves insect bites. Especially effective for burns The leaf of this plant has many active ingredients in its pulp, including steroids, organic acids, enzymes, amino acids, glucomanna and polysaccharides. These active ingredients have been found to heal and regenerate skin. In skin care products, Aloe Vera leaves a microscopically thin film of these enzymes, amino acids glucomanna and polysaccharides that act as a barrier to protect the skin . This works as a barrier to keep body fluids from escaping
Aloe Vera Gel (Aloe barbadensis juice)
Expressed from the aloe vera plant. The leaves store large amounts of water. Aloe vera improves hydration is soothing and healing to all skin types. Chemical analysis has shown the presence of mucopolysacharides, a natural moisturizing factor. Aloe vera is composed of water, the enzymes catalase and cellulose, minerals, calcium, aluminum, iron, zinc, magnesium, sodium, 20 amino acids and carbohydrates.True aloe vera is watery and thin. The products that you see on the marketplace that are thick have been chemically thickened and highly diluted.
Alpha Hydroxy acids (AHA)
Derived from natural occurring acids found in nature such as fruits, sugar cane and milk. These natural acids, when applied to the skin, improve the integrity of the skin by removing dead skin cells from the exterior layer of the skin (epidermal layer). AHAs break down the glue-like substance that binds dead skin cells together, allowing the outer layer of dead cells to slough off. AHAs also stimulate the production of new skin cells, promote the production of collagen and act as humectants by absorbing moisture from the atmosphere thus providing more moisture to the outer layer of the skin (epidermis).
Anise (Pimpinella anisum)
Oil of Anise, distilled in Europe from the fruits of Pimpinella anisum, Anise, and in China from the fruits of Illicium anisatum, Star Anise, a small tree indigenous to China, is colorless, or very pale yellow, with taste and odor like the fruit. The oil is used for its aromatic, carminative and stimulant properties. The bulk of the oil in commerce is obtained from the Star Anise fruit in China. The fruits are also often imported into France and the oil extracted there. In Germany, aniseed flavoring is very popular in cakes and soups. In France, Spain, Italy and South America it is used in the preparation of cordial liquors. In aromatherapy It is said to improve the spirits of women.
Apricot Kernel Oil (Prunus armeniaca)
This oil is extracted from the kernels of the fruit and is chocked full of vitamins and minerals. . It is known to soften and condition the skin. Good for all skin types and maturing skin.
Apple cider Vinegar
Vinegar has a tonic action that promotes blood circulation in the small capillaries that irrigate the skin. It is also antiseptic, preventing the proliferation of bacteria, viruses, or yeast that trigger infection. It can dissolve excessive fatty deposits at the surface of the skin and reduce scaly or peeling conditions. Lastly, vinegar regulates the pH of the skin.
Aspalathus linearis
This South African herb occurs naturally only in the Cederberg and Olifants River mountain ranges of South Africa. In soap making it promotes soothing, creamy lather and can aid a variety of skin conditions. Often called African red tea or red bush.
Aveno Sativa
Oat kernel extract is a soluble form of hydrolyzed oats that improves the 'feel' quality to lotions and has extraordinary moisturizing abilities.
Avocado Oil (Persea americana)
Obtained from the pulp of the avocado, this oil contains many essential fatty acids, minerals, proteins, amino acids and large amounts of Vitamin A, D, E and beta carotene. It is frequently used in the cosmetic industry. It contains a high degree of unsaponifiables (the portion of the oil that does not react to form soap, but retains it's original makeup). Good for mature  skin and eczema, dull and dry skin.  This makes for not only a moisturizing but a healing bar of soap.

Balsam of Peru (Myroxylon Pereiræ)
Balsam of Peru is a resin extracted from incisions in the bark of the Peruvian Balsam tree. The tree is native to South and Central America. It has antiseptic actions that combats bacteria, promotes wound healing, and kills parasites, especially scabies. It is known for its natural vanilla scent.  It is used in soap manufacturing, for its fragrance, and because it makes a soft creamy lather, useful for chapped hands.
Basil, Sweet (Ocimum basilicum/France)
Sweet basil oil has a floral-spicy odor with a lasting sweetness. Aromatherapy benefits are thought to be that of clarifying, uplifting, energizing, strengthening, and refreshing. Alleged to improve mental clarity and memory. Basil should be avoided during pregnancy. 
Bay (Pimenta racemosa)
Bay oil is steam distilled from the small leaves and twigs of the bay rum tree. It has a spicy, sweet aroma with a definite note of clove. Aromatherapy benefits are thought to be that of warming, relaxing, calming.
Beeswax (Apis mellifera) 
Beeswax comes from the honeycomb of virgin bees. The Bees process the honey form the nectar and then convert it into wax. Ten pounds of honey produces one pound of wax. It has a honey like fragrance. It is used as an emulsifier and stiffener
Bergamot (Citrus bergamia/Italy/Fruit Peel)
Cold pressed from the peel of the nearly ripe fruit. The scent of bergamot is fresh, lively, fruity and sweet. It is the primary ingredient in Earl Gray Tea. Aromatherapy benefits are thought to be uplifting, normalizing and confidence building.
Bladderwrack (seaweed)
A form of seaweed that is thought  to be revitalizing and nourishing to the skin. The amino acid content of Bladderwrack is high compared to other plants. In  skin care, Bladderwrack is known for its ability to help reduce moisture loss and protect the skin against irritation. Its high silicon content makes it beneficial for excessively dry or mature skin.
Calendula (Calendula officinalis)
One of the best known and versatile herbs in Western herbal medicine.. Used medicinally in medieval northern Europe and later during the American Civil War to draw out infections. Calendula flowers, also known as pot marigolds,  also contain compounds known to promote the healing of burns and wounds. It is used as a remedy for many skin problems. It  is also a cleansing and detoxifying herb and is taken internally for a variety of ailments. We use calendula petals in most all of our soaps and we use calendula infused oils in several.  Beneficial properties are thought to be anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, astringent and fungicidal. Calendula is used in skin care products to soften and sooth chapped, dry, rough skin, diaper rash, burns, cuts, eczema, greasy skin, inflammations, insect bites, rashes and wounds. Only the common deep-orange flowered variety is considered to be of medicinal value.
Calendula CO2 Extract (Calendula officinalis/Egypt organic)
Used for its medicial value on burns, cuts, eczema, oily skin, inflammations, insect bites, rashes and wounds .

Camellia Oil (Camellia Sinensis) 
Camellia oil is very high in oleic acid. It has been used in Japan for centuries to moisturize and condition the skin, hair and nails. It is an exceptional oil for soaps.
Canadian Glacial Clay
A true, powder mist fine, glacial clay from the remote Pacific islands of NW British Columbia, Canada. This clay is thought to be the 'crème de la crème' of clays for cosmetic and therapeutic use.
Candelilla Wax (Euphorbia antisyphilitica) 
Caldelilla wax is taken from the candelilla plant a desert shrub that is native to Mexico and Texas. Is used as a thickener in products. Can be used in the same proportions in a recipe as beeswax and is a wax of choice for vegans.
Cardamom Seed (Elettaria cardamomum/India)
This oil has a spicy, aromatic camphor-like aroma with floral undertones. Aromatherapy benefits are that of warming, sense enhancing.
Carnauba Wax Flakes (Copernicia prunifera)
The sap from the leaves of the Brazilian wax palm tree. The melting point for this wax is 181 degrees F and is an extremely hard wax.
Carrot Seed Oil (Daucus Carota)
Loaded with vitamins A & E, this oil helps balance the skin's moisture content and is known more for its healing properties than for its scent.  A source of Beta Carotene. Useful for all types of skin, especially good for acne, eczema, psoriasis and damaged skin. and for balancing oily and dry skin. Accelerates formation of new cells, improves elasticity. Stimulates and tones the skin. 
Cassia Bark (Cinnamomum casia/China/bark)
We know it as the spice cinnamon in the United States. Can be a skin irritant. Aromatherapy qualities of  euphoria, energizing, warming. Thought to be an aphrodisiac for some women.
Castor Bean Oil
Sometimes referred to as Palm Christi oil, it is rendered from the first cold pressing of the castor bean. Acts like a humectant, attracting and retaining moisture to the skin. As a soap making oil, it makes a wonderfully emollient, hard bar of soap. 
Cedarwood Atlas (Cedrus atlantica/Morocco)
The Atlas Cedar grows in the Atlas mountains of Morocco and is actually a pine, not a cypress like the red cedar in the United States. The aroma is woody and camphor-like. Cedarwood Atlas is used in soaps for its aroma and use as a fixative. Aromatherapy benefits are thought to be that of stabilizing, stress reducing and self enhancing
Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) (Roman), Matricaria chamomilla (German)
The essential oil from this plant has many uses. It is calming to the nerves and has proven useful for children's ailments such as colic, sleeplessness, colds, and inflammation. This essential oil also helps acne and puffiness on the face.
It is also anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and soothing and healing to wounds.
China Clay (kaolinite)
This mild kaolin clay does not draw oils from the skin so is therefore a good choice for dry to normal skin. Provides stimulation to the skin and mild exfoliation; improves circulation.
Cinnamon Leaf (Cinnamomum zeylanicum/Indonesia)
It is distilled from the leaves of the same tree. It aroma is reminiscent of cloves rather than cinnamon. It is often used in Oriental fragrances. Can be a skin irritant.   Aromatherapy benefits are thought to be that of refreshing, vitalizing.
Citronella (Cymbopogon nardus)
Extracted from the grasses. The odor of Ceylon Citronella is fresh, grassy, warm and woodsy. Aromatherapy benefits are thought to be that of purifying, vitalizing. Reputed to be an insect repellant.
Citric Acid
Widely used in the cosmetic industry. Derived from citrus fruits by fermentation of crude sugars. Used as a preservative and to adjust acid-alkali balance. Citric acid is said to have antioxidant and toning properties.
Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea/France/Flowering Top, Herb)
Spicy, hay like, bittersweet aroma similar to Bergamot. The aroma is long lasting and the oil is valued as a fixative. Aromatherapy benefits are that of centering, euphoric, visualizing.
Clove Bud (Syzygium aromaticum/Madagascar/Flower Bud)
The best oil is distilled from the flower buds. A more inferior oil can be obtained from the leaves and stems. Powerful spicy, fruity, sweet aroma. Can be a skin irritant. Aromatherapy qualities of warming and sense enhancing.
Cocoa Butter
Cocoa Butter is pressed from the cocoa bean and the vegetable oil that results is a by-product  of the making of chocolate. It is an excellent emollient, it softens dry skin,  leaving skin soft and smooth.  Unlike other oils that penetrate into the skin, cocoa butter remains on top and lays down a protective layer, preventing the skin from drying out.  People allergic to chocolate should avoid soaps made with cocoa butter.
Coconut Oil
This oil, extracted from copra, the dried flesh of coconuts,  is the most important oil in soap making, giving soap hardness and terrific lather with lots of bubbles. It is the only oil that will lather in sea water.   In most commercially available soaps, this is the only plant based oil used. The main purpose of coconut oil is to produce a rich abundant lather helping to spread the soap to all nooks and crannies of the body. In small quantities coconut oil is a moisturizer, but when used in larger quantities it has a tendency to dry out the skin.

Comfrey (Symphytum officinale)
Comfrey, or "knit bone" as some herbalists call it is thought to help repair damaged tissue and broken bones and is one of the most well-known herbs for helping skin problems. It is thought to lessen scar formation. In cosmetics and in medicinal preparations both the leaves and roots are used.  Allantoin, a chemical constituent of comfrey, is said to be responsible for cell proliferation and regeneration. The roots are very rich in mucilage, which offers relief to dry and irritated skin.  Comfrey is used to make infused oil, salves, creams, facial astringents and other preparations.  Comfrey should be limited to  external use only. Warning: Comfrey should not be taken internally. Copaiba (Copaifera officinalis)
An evergreen tree native to tropic America and Africa. The oil is extracted from the resin of the tree. The scent is sweet, woody. Aromatherapy effects are said to be those of calming, promotes a peaceful state of mind and restful sleep, opens breathing passages and allows deeper breathing, mood uplifting, promotes mental clarity, good for meditation, healing and moisturizing to the skin, used as a fixative to anchor a scent.
 
Coriander Seed (Coriandrum sativum/France)
Spicy and pleasantly sweet aroma. Aromatherapy benefits of normalizing, relaxing, stabilizing, clarifying
Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens)
Source: plant branches. The scent is fresh, woody, clear and light. A clean scent with a middle to base note. S The fragrance is comforting and is said to aid in smoothing transitions, especially the loss of a loved one and the ending of relationships. Said to aid in circulation, varicose veins and menstrual problems. Restorative, calmative. Good for mature, oily skin.
Dead Sea Salts (Sodium Chloride)
Dried salt from the Dead Sea. Sea salt softens the water and can be used for cleansing, abrasive exfoliate and helps draw toxins from the body. Contains minerals from the ocean. People worldwide have used the healing power of salts baths for centuries. The minerals and trace elements deep clean and revitalize the body. That is why in countries everywhere people will come far and wide to bath in hot springs, mineral baths and the Dead Sea because of the unique mineral compositions of each place. The Dead Sea in Israel attracts visitors because it is the lowest point on the earth contains a high percentage of natural minerals. In many countries people with conditions labeled incurable have reduced the symptoms or completely resolved them after being treated with mineral hydrotherapy.
Décolleté 
The upper part of the chest and lower neck area. Coming from the French word, décolleter, to lower the neck line, uncover the neck. This delicate area shows signs of aging more readily.
Demulcent
A soothing, usually mucilaginous or oily substance, such as glycerin or lanolin, used especially to relieve pain in inflamed or irritated mucous membranes.
Elemi (Canarium luzonicum/Philippines)
The trees that produce elemi oil are in the same family as those which produce myrrh and frankincense. The oil has a light, lemony, peppery, balsamic aroma. In soapmaking it is often used as a fixative. Aromatherapy benefits are that of strengthening, balancing, centering,meditative.
Emollient
An ingredient that imparts a softening, soothing sensation to the skin. A moisturizer.
Emulsifying Wax
plant based, used to create a bond between water andoil. Emulsifying wax is a critical ingredient in lotions and creams since there is no other natural product that can create a smooth texture.
Essential Oils
Extracted from actual plant materials like flowers, leaves, roots and/or tree bark. Used in soap making to impart special properties in soaps. An example would be tea tree oil which  is a known antibacterial, antifungal agent. Each essential oil has its own blueprint to impart a special scent, an aromatherapy effect or certain skin care properties (i.e. antiseptic, antibacterial, etc.) Unlike vegetable oils expressed from nuts and seeds, essential oils are not actually oily. Some essential oils are viscous; others are fairly solid and most are somewhat watery. Worldwide there are 3000 different essential oils with only about 300 commonly used. Essential oils are the most concentrated form of any botanical. It takes at least one pound of any given plant to create one drop of essential oil. Essential oils can vary a lot in price based on supply and demand. They can be very expensive.
Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus/Spain)
Has long been used in topical preparations like liniments and salves. Aromatherapy benefits are that of purifying, invigorating and cooling.
Eucalyptus, Lemon (Eucalyptus citriodora/Brazil/leaf)
Similar to  the scent of citronella. Eucalyptus citriodora has a fresh, rosy, grass like aroma. Unlike lemon essential oil which fades quickly, lemon eucalyptus maintains its aroma. Aromatherapy benefits are that of purifying, relaxing.
Exfoliation
The process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin.
Fragrance Oils
Man-made synthetic and natural blends of aromas. Many times high quality fragrance oils will include essential oils in their makeup. Fragrance oils can scent soaps inexpensively and they can mimic essential oils that are prohibitively expensive in nature (like neroi, rose and sandalwood). Fragrance oils are chosen by Earth Maiden when there is not an essential oil available to match a scent (as in cucumber fragrance) or when use of the essential oil would put a strain on the rainforest or the environment( as in sandalwood).

Geranium  (Pelargonium graveolens)
This essential oil is soothing, purifying and healing to the skin. It is thought to aid in the healing of eczema, burns, and irritations. The aroma is said to be uplifting for the spirit and  a tension reducer.
Ginger ( Zingiber officinale/China)
Ginger oil has a spicy, warm, woodsy aroma. Aromatherapy benefits are that of warming, strengthening, anchoring).
Glycerin
A sweet, colorless or yellowish liquid obtained from from plant oils and butters  as a byproduct of saponification. Glycerin is a soothing, humectant which draws moisture from the air to the skin. Glycerin is an emollient, which makes the skin feel softer and smoother, reduce rough feeling, cracking and irritation.  Used in manufacturing  as a sweetener, in cosmetics, liquid soaps, etc.
Glycolic acid
One of the alpha hydroxy (AHA) acids that is most beneficial in skin care. Glycolic acid is a natural exfoliator and is produced by sugar cane. It is beneficial in that it speeds up the skin renewal process. It is the only AHA that is small enough to penetrate the skin cell walls and once inside the cell it triggers the production of collagen which in turn pumps up the skin cells to reduce wrinkles on the skin surface.
 Grapefruit (Citrus x paradisi)
This essential oil is extracted by cold expression from the fresh peel. In aromatherapy it is used to cleanse and stimulate the mind, uplifting and refreshing. In skin care, it is thought to sooth, purify and heal the skin. 
Grapeseed Oil ((Vitis vinifera)
Made from the seeds of the wine producing grapes. The lightest of oils and nearly odorless. Contains vitamins, minerals, high in polyunsaturates and proteins
Green Clay (Montmorillonite) 
Derived from volcanic deposits, is the richest in mineral compositions and is the most drawing of all clays available. The finest of clays. Rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium. It energizes the connective tissue. It is antiseptic and healing. It gently stimulates and is effective in increasing the lymph flow and circulation, enabling oxygen and speeding the elimination of wastes. Green clay has a high mineral content.
 
Green Tea (Camellia sinensis)
The leaves from this plant contain Tannic acid which is cooling on the skin
(especially for sunburns). It also contains catechins which help repair and prevent skin damage. Some studies suggests that Green Tea can inhibit
some forms of skin cancer.
Hemp seed oil (Cannabis sativa)
Hemp seed oil is derived from the seed of the cannabis sativa, the marijuana plant. The cultivation of hemp was banned in the US in 1937. but it is still legally grown commercially today in Europe, Russia, India and China  Hemp seed oil contains over  80% of the hard to find polyunsaturated Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's).  No other naturally produced oil has a higher concentration of EFAs, making Hemp seed oil an excellent oil for use in soaps. Hemp seed oil is thought to be beneficial  in skin care for replenishment of essential fatty acids that are easily absorbed by the skin and replenishment of the oils missing from sun exposure, poor nutrition and other neglect. It is renowned for helping to moisturize, nourish, and replenish damaged cells and soften dry skin. Unlike many saturated fats that form a temporary barrier on the skin, hemp oil penetrates deep into the skin cells, preventing them from drying out and dying. The result is thought to be younger, healthier looking skin. Some people worry that hemp seed oil may contain some of the intoxicating qualities that the leaves produce. THC is found in the resin in the flowering part of the plant before the seeds are mature enough to harvest. By the time the seeds are ripe, resin production is low and it is thought that by the time the seeds are cleaned and washed for pressing, they contain no signs of THC.

Honey
Honey is the sweet material taken from the nectar of flowers and manufactured by bees. Used since Egyptian times for medicinal and cosmetic purposes. Honey is full of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes, has an emollient property, is soothing and is a humectant. Honey is cleansing and antibacterial. Bacteria cannot live in honey, which demonstrates its natural preservative properties. The  high potassium content in honey  makes it virtually impossible for bacteria to survive in it. Honey absorbs the moisture out of the bacterial cell walls making it impossible for them to survive. It leaves a micro thin protective film on the skin.  During the middle ages honey was used on the battle fields of Europe to sooth and disinfect wounds.  Honey is a moisturizer, antibacterial, humectant. 
Humectant
A substance that attracts and retains moisture to itself. Helps keep your skin from drying out.
Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia chinensis)
Jojoba oil comes from a desert plant that survives heat and drought with its own built in survival system. The pores of the plant seal over with its wax like substance which reduces evaporation of moisture. Jojoba oil is harvested from the bean of the plant. In our products, jojoba is used for its ability to lay down a coating on the skin or scalp that attracts and retains moisture. It is thought to  also regulate the flow of sebum, which in beneficial for many hair and scalp problems. Jojoba lubricates the hair shaft, helps prevent split ends and has been found to help the condition of over processed hair. It is frequently used in shampoo bars.
Kukui Nut Oil
Kukui nut oil is expressed from the nuts and kernels within the fruit. It is a non greasy oil that helps to rejuvenate dry, lifeless skin. Hawaiians have used to treat sunburn and chapped lips. It is high in linolenic acids, essential fatty acids, Vitamins A, E & F and is  easily absorbed by the skin. Skin care properties are thought to be healing in the treatment of acne, eczema, psoriasis, sunburn and chapped skin. Kukui nut oil adds richness to soaps.
Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia and L. officinalis/ France/ Plant tops)
Lavender has been a traditional folk remedy and fragrance for centuries.  Lavender is thought to be a particularly effective treatment for tension due to stress and to promote restful sleep. It is considered a natural relaxant, anti-depressant and detoxifier. It has been used to scent linen.  It has a sweet floral-herbaceous scent, with a balsamic woody undertone. Lavender is used in skin care for many skin conditions including: abscesses, acne, allergies, athlete’s foot, boils, bruises, burns, dandruff, dermatitis, earache, eczema, inflammations, insect bites and stings, insect repellent, lice, psoriasis, ringworm, scabies, sores, spots, all skin types, sunburn, wounds.

Lecithin
Derived from soybeans and corn. Has a softening and soothing effect on skin. A natural antioxidant and emollient. Lecithin is a super skin restorative agent and moisturizer. It has the ability to penetrate the epidermis and carry substances to the right cell level.
 
Lemon (Citrus Limonum/USA)
Cold pressed from the peel it has a fresh lemon scent. Lemon was used by our forefathers to prevent scurvy during overseas voyages. Traditional uses include: balancing the nervous system, disinfectant, to refresh and uplift, purify. May cause skin sensitivity to the sun or irritate sensitive skin.
Lemon Eucalyptus ( Eucalyptus citriodora/Brazil)
Steam distilled from leaf and twigs, it has a pure lemony scent. Used in the treatment of colds, flu and pulmonary infections due to its reputed antiseptic, antiviral, and bactericidal actions  Lemon eucalyptus is also used with arthritis and rheumatism, muscle and joint aches and pains. It has strong deodorant and fungicidal qualities, deters insects, is purifying and sedative, with aromatherapy benefits that sooth and calm. Does not cause skin sensitivity to the sun.
Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus/Guatemala)
This grassy citrus smelling herb is Native to Asia. It is used in traditional Indian medicine for infectious illness and fever. Beneficial properties are thought to be those of an antidepressant, antimicrobial, anti oxidant, antiseptic, astringent, bactericidal, deodorant, fungicidal, nervous sedative. Lemongrass is used in skin care for acne, excessive perspiration, deodorizer, insect repellent (fleas, ticks, lice), open pores, pediculosis, tissue toner. Use with care and avoid in pregnancy.
Lime (Citrus aurantifolia/United States, Mexico/Peel)
Steam distilled from the fruit. The oil that we use has a rich, fresh peeled aroma. Traditional uses: to purify the air, to relieve coughs and congestion, for uplifting and cheering the spirit and for mental alertness. Aromatherapy benefits are that of equalizing. refreshing, cheering.
Litsea Cubeba (May Chang/China)
Steam distilled from the fruit. Provides a lemon-scented "base" note often used as a fixative to anchor other citrus oils. Attributes are that of calming, antiviral, regenerative.
Macadamia Nut (Macadamia integrifolia)
Pressed from the macadamia nut, which is an evergreen tree grown mainly in Hawaii. Macadamia nut oil is similar to sebum, the oil naturally produced by human skin to protect it. Absorbs well into the skin, is highly emollient and soothing. Contains magnesium and thiamin.
Mango Butter
Extracted from the mango fruit, it is an excellent moisturizer.
Meadowfoam Oil (Limnanthes alba)
In cosmetics, meadowfoam oil has high oxidative stability and helps to stabilize other oils, adds shine to hair and scalp, remoisurizes skin and revitalizes dry skin. Good for sensitive skin. Creates a barrier film and prevents moisture loss. An excellent choice for chapped or cracked skin and lips. 
Milk, Goat (Lactose)
Goat milk leaves the skin feeling silky smooth. It is and effective and softening skin cleanser. Milk leaves the skin feeling silky smooth with a hydrated appearance. An effective and softening skin cleanser. Milk proteins smooth, firm and soften the skin. Milk has a long standing beauty history. Cleopatra's famous milk baths contained lactic acid, which removed the upper layer of the skin to reveal smooth, new skin.
Natural Oils 
Natural Oils are made from essential oils and aromatic herbs, blossoms, leaves, spices, woods, resins and absolutes. Absolutes are botanical essences extracted from plants with the use of solvents which are then removed leaving the plant oils behind. Natural Oils are cosmetic grade, multi purposed 100% natural fragrances- no synthetic fragrances or fillers are added.  Since the Natural Oils are not pure essential oils, aromatherapy qualities cannot be claimed but they are a nice, natural alternative to synthetic fragrances or prohibitively expensive essential oils.
Nettle (Urtica doica)
 As a child I remember the "sting" of the fresh nettle, due to histamines and acids in the leaves and the stem. But, when dried, the nettle actually soothes sting and itch and is good for inflammatory skin conditions.  It is a very useful herb, rich in iron, silicon, potassium and other minerals and plant hormones which strengthens and supports the whole body. Know also as a circulatory stimulant, which helps stop bleeding. 
Oatmeal
Used in soaps for texture and exfoliation. : Oats contain Vitamin D (sometimes called the sunshine vitamin) which is good for skin, and silica, for an invigorating scrub. May be helpful for eczema, shingles & cold sores. Oats are thought to sooth the skin.
Olive Leaf Extract
Olive Leaf Extract is a useful addition to moisturizing cosmetics, protective skin care products and products for mature skin. This leaf extract is a blend of active substances such as bioflavonoids and polyphenols that have anti-oxidant qualities and function as free radical scavengers.
 
Olive Oil
Olive Oil is extracted from ripe olives. It was first used in the soap making process in France and Spain.  If no other oils are added , olive oil producestiny bubbles and creamy lather Excellent moisturizer that attracts and holds moisture close to the skin. It forms a breathable film to prevent loss of internal moisture but does not block the normal functions of the skin. Olive oil is great for sensitive skin and babies. Olive oil is an emollient and restorative.
Orange, Sweet (Citrus sinensis/USA/Brazil/Peel)
Cold pressed from the peels of the sweet orange, the aroma is lively, fruity and sweet. Traditional uses are to calm and relieve stress, as an  environmental disinfectant. The sweet orange scent is thought to brighten mood. Sweet orange oil fades quickly so we always use a fixative like Litsea Cubeba to hold the scent longer. Aromatherapy benefits are cheering, refreshing, uplifting. 
Palmarosa Oil (Cymbopogon martini)
This herb is native to India and Pakistan. It has floral, rose, grassy  and geranium like scent with a sweet honey undertone.  The oil is extracted from the grass. Palmarosa has been used since antiquity.  It was transported on ships from Bombay to Constantinople. In soap making we use the essential oil form. Beneficial properties are thought to be that of an antiseptic, bactericidal, and hydrating. In skin care, Palmarosa oil is thought to be good for Acne, dermatitis, skin rashes and minor skin infections, scars, wrinkles, moisturizes the skin, stimulates cellular regeneration. Promotes emotional stability and health.

Palm Oil
Palm Oil is made by expressing the oil from the pulp of the fruit of the Oil Palm. At Earth Maiden Soaps and Sundries, we use palm oil in place of tallow or lard.  It helps the bar hold together well in water. Although this oil has no significant skin care properties, it helps avoid pimples and blackheads that may be caused by  animal fats present in most commercial soaps.
Palm Kernel Oil
 This oil is extracted from a variety of palm trees. This oils properties are very similar to those of coconut oil. Because of its high lauric acid content, the main purpose of  this oil is to contribute hardness to the soap bar and  exceptional, rich abundant lather. It is an emollient, helping to spread the soap to all nooks and crannies of the body. 
Patchouli (Pogostemon patchouli and P. cablin)
Essential oil of Patchouli has a intense earthy, balsamic , woody aroma with spicy undertones. Native to Indonesia and Philippines where it is used to scent linen and clothes. In other eastern countries Patchouli is known to prevent and treat various diseases. We use patchouli essential oil and pulverized patchouli leaves in many of our soaps. Beneficial properties are thought to be that of an antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, antiseptic, antitoxin, antiviral, aphrodisiac, astringent, bactericidal, deodorant, fungicidal, prophylactic, nervous stimulant. Patchouli is used in skin care for acne, cracked or chapped skin, dandruff, dermatitis, eczema, fungal infections, hair care, insect repellent, oily hair and skin, open pores, sores, wounds, wrinkles.
Peppermint (Mentha piperita)
Has a cooling, emollient effect Relieves itching due to dry skin. For the mind it is thought to be uplifting, improve clarity, sharpens the senses, is energizing and reviving.
Peru Balsam (Myroxylon perairae)
This essential oil has a vanilla scent and comes from an evergreen tree. It is purifying, warming and  healing to the skin. The scent is calming and reduces stress.
Petitgrain (citrus aurantium/ Africa)
This essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the leaves and twigs of the same. It has a sweet, woody, orange floral scent. Its scent is calming and refreshing. In skin care it is used for acne, excessive perspiration, greasy skin and hair. Aromatherapy qualities are thought to aid insomnia. nervous exhaustion and other stress related conditions.
Pink Clay (Kaolinite)
Rich in trace elements, used to detoxify and cleanse the face and body. It can be used on normal to dry skin to gently cleanse and exfoliate the skin while improving circulation . Clays are used to draw our impurities and toxins through absorption. Great for insect bites and stings. Composed of silica, iron, magnesium, calcium, sodium, zinc and other minerals. Clays remove old sebum that is clogged in pores. They also remove environmental poisons left of the skin.
Polysorbate 20 (Vegetable Emulsifier)
Widely used emulsifier, a vicious oily liquid derived from lauric acid. Lauric acid is a common constituent of coconut oil. Polysorbate 20 is a surfactant, meaning it is a wetting agent that lowers the water surface tension permitting it to penetrate more easily. We use Polysorbate 20 in our room and linen spritzers to provide a stable blend of oils and water.

Rhassoul (Moroccan Lava) Clay
It is an ancient clay found deep under the Atlas mountains of Morocco that has been used for 1400 years as a soap, shampoo and skin conditioner. . It is a mineral rich clay that is an excellent choice for cleansing, toning and detoxifying the skin. The mineral properties of Rhassoul Clay were studied extensively and presented at the 12th meeting of the National Institute of Phytotherapy in Paris in 1985. Rhassoul Clay contains a high percentage of silica, magnesium, potassium, and calcium and has the great capacity of  absorption and adsorption due to its high level of ion exchange. Clinical studies have been conducted by two different research laboratories in the United States to evaluate Rhassoul use for skin conditions. The results of this single use Rhassoul study found that Rhassoul clay reduced dryness (79%), reduced flakiness (41%), improved skin clarity (68%), Improved skin elasticity and firmness (24%), improved skin texture (106%), removed surface oil and oil from inside and around comedons, removed dead skin layers, resulting in a general
